Dear FBC,
Recently, I came across an intriguing quote that sounds familiar. It says,
“The current principle of the present age seems to be, 'Some things are either true or false, according to the point of view from which you look at them.' Black is white, and white is black according to circumstances; and it does not particularly matter which you call it. Truth of course is true, but it would be rude to say that the opposite is a lie; we must not be bigoted, but remember the motto, 'So many men, so many minds.' ”
Can you remember who said that? Barack Obama? Bill Clinton? Rick Warrren? No. Can you recall when it was said? This quote was penned by the great preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon over 100 years ago. Although Spurgeon died in 1892, isn’t his view on truth relevant? The war on the truth was blowing even in the middle of the 19th century. Excellent author David Wells wrote a book entitled, “No place for truth.” Because our culture is infested with the cancer of pluralism and relativism, it has no tolerance for truth. The winds of skepticism have always blown at the Scriptures. The storms of criticism thunder to this day, denigrating the authenticity of the Bible. At the end of the day, you and I have a choice; will we choose to follow the eternal Word of God, our feelings, or the latest trends of post-modern thought?
The Bible is an old book, but its relevance is never outdated, or antiquated. It is not subject to fads or trends. Our families, communities, churches, and world need a firm foundation that comes from the Word of God. If the economy crashes, the Bible is loaded with the principles that would have prevented it. In Ephesians 5, the Bible shows me how to love my wife. In Ephesians 6, it explains how I should love, discipline and instruct my children. In Psalm 119:89, the psalmist comments on the eternal quality of the Bible when he writes, “Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.”
You can trust the truth of the Bible. The Word of God isn’t going anywhere. You and I will someday die. The Bible is here forever! Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. God isn’t going anywhere either! If this is true, then living by the Book has value forever. What a goal! Someday you and I will be rewarded for living by the Book. This upcoming new year, when your feelings go south, and the world whispers into your ears the futility of following Christ, remember the TRUTH of the Word of God.
The beauty of Jesus Christ is worth living for. Faith Bible Church is full of changed lives. God’s Spirit is changing all of us by the power of the Word. In a world that says there is no place for Truth, place the Truth of Jesus Christ at home in your heart today. Share with others how God’s Word has changed your life. When the winds of difficulty blow and people around you look for ways to “bailout” of life, by the grace of God, you will stand on the rock of Scripture. I love you in the Lord!
For the love of the truth that is in Jesus Christ, Rick Hoppe
